First start by gearing yourself up to block advertising from your mind--for good. It would be so convenient to believe it, so easy to buy into the rich colors, thick tresses shining so bright it hurts your eyes...but try to rise above the temptation. Most of it, if not all, is just a farce, hours of time poured into a commercial or photo to make it look irresistably convincing.
Here are a couple tips to consider:

  1. Over-treating your hair with coloring, perming, bleaching and who knows what else, is really hard on your hair. So if you have a compulsion with this, you might want to consider giving your hair a bit of a break, or find a more gentle way to achieve a look.

  2. Don't over-brush your hair! Excessive brushing damages hair and causes split ends, especially if you're not gentle. Do brush with a wide tooth comb (especially when hair is wet) and then a boar hair bristle brush, which helps coat your hair with your scalp's natural oils giving it a healthy shine.

  3. Be careful with your hair when it’s wet; it's more vulnerable to damage. After a shower, pat dry with a towel. If you're going to brush, again use a wide tooth comb and don't pull through your hair, gently work it through.

  4. Cut off your split ends! If you have dead, scraggly hair, (which is when one strand of hair has more than one end) then give it an amazing transfer just by cutting off those ends! It'll make your hair look thicker and healthier. It may keep your hair looking good to go in and get it trimmed every 6-8 weeks, but if you take care of it properly you may not need to go in that often. Check your ends to see if they've split and could use a trim before going.
